very good but get it finished

Doves’ Jimi Goodwin:

“We just need a couple of key ingredients now. I think we’ve got all the classic song structure things nailed, we need a few out there join the dots things now to even the record out – something a bit avantgarde, devoid of any verse and chorus, that’s where I’m thinking.”

now playing in the us only

I don’t want to hate the Zune. Ok, so I’ll never buy the device but I want to like the software for it’s non windows standard gui, for it’s animations and for the little red glow of the equaliser at the bottom of the window when you’re playing something. I won’t, however be using the new version because the new ‘now playing’ screen (pictured above) amongst other new features are only available if your version of Windows has it’s location set to ‘US’.

albums in 2008 (update #8 13/09/08)

I’ve posted lists of upcoming albums that play might as well charge my card for now but this is going to be different. The aim is that new albums will be added, bought albums crossed out, missing details filled in and hopefully this post will jump to the top of the pile on each edit so that if nothing else I can see exactly how much money I’ve spent on cds.

So, the list as of 13/09/2008:

  • The Feeling - Join With Us (18th Feb)
  • Elbow - The Seldom Seen Kid (17th Mar)
  • We Are Scientists - Brain Thrust Mastery (17th Mar)
  • Guillemots - Red (24th Mar)
  • The Little Ones - Terry Tales & Fallen Gates (EP) (8th Apr via iTunes)
  • Delays - Everything’s The Rush (5th May)
  • Coldplay - Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends (12th June)
  • Feeder - Silent Cry (June 16th)
  • The Little Ones - Morning Tide (July 28th)
  • KMW - Before the Ruin (September 15th)
  • Keane - Perfect Symmetry (October 13th)
  • Kaiser Chiefs - Off With Their Heads (October 13th)
  • Snow Patrol - A Hundred Million Suns (October 27th)
  • Coldplay - Prospects March (December)
  • Captain - Unknown Title (Sometime?)

i don’t really know the band

If there’s one thing better than seeing your favourite band (that would be Doves for those reading this via rss or anything else that can’t see the image) playing their first gig in 2.5 years, it’s getting in for free (thanks to Si for ‘winning’ the tickets). Clearly I’m going to be biased but I thought they were great and the new songs sounded particularly good (except the 4th which I wasn’t as taken by). Now, lads could you please get a move on and finish the album.

new? from ikea

It’s sad I know, but I love a gander at the Ikea catalogue dreaming of that day in the future when I can afford a house and have £2.50 left over to furnish it. Now I’m guessing that they didn’t invent it, but this tv panel (above) is to my mind simply genius. Ok, so you could just sit the tv on the cabinet, but as someone who’s tv is fixed to the wall and trails wires left and right, I like it.

ignorance is bliss

I’m not one to pay much attention to food packaging, beyond checking how long said item needs to be cooked for, whether it contains any random ingredients or seeing how many languages you can fit on the tin/jar/wrapper. I certainly don’t usually pay attention to the nutritional information (except for during the odd game of nutritional top trumps). Recently however the big indicator labels on the front of packages have started to catch my eye, starting while having a quick sailing lunch, when we tried to work out who had the most salty sandwich.

Now as the one of the group most likely to drive of an evening, the non-alcoholic drink is my friend. That was, until I glanced at the side of a can of Sprite to see that it contained no less than 39% of my rda of sugar. It turns out that regular Coke is the same and as much as I’d like to look the other way, I just can’t.

So from now on it’s Diet Coke, other ’sugar-free’ soft drinks and generic fake lemonade, which are all less likely to destroy my teeth.

red on grey

This is about the best shot I managed to get while at the Bournemouth Air Festival yesterday. Trust me, it wasn’t the day to be sat on the beach.
