Last night our team, Jimbo and the Jet Set, won joint
second prize at the pub quiz. To show off our success, and to rub it in the noses of those
who weren’t there, the winning quiz form is available in the ‘misc’ album of my photo’s
pages. To see it, click

We also
correctly ‘guessed’ the mystery year, but didn’t win any chocolate because you can’t
win money and chocolate, silly rules.

If you’ve played Half-life 2, you’ll know what a fantastic game it is, with both a good plot and graphics which surpass almost any other. Well Valve have gone a step further with their introduction of hdr, high dynamic range lighting.
Essentially it means that light, reflection and refraction are modelled to new levels, leading to the game looking that little bit more life real life. If nothing else, it’s cutting edge graphics that you and me can have on our home pc’s.
Yes, it is all a bit too much for my pc, which can’t cope with the complete effect, but it’s nice to look at none the less. Oh, and no comments on how it’s been done before in other games, because I just don’t care.
After
posting how I’d like Catch to look the same in both IE and Firefox, I’ve finally managed
it (after having a brainwave last night). It’s been achieved by changing the page
templates somewhat and starting the css from scratch. For this reason, there may be bits
that look odd or don’t work. If you find one, post it in a comment and I’ll fix
it.
IE users, this is what it’s meant to look like…
I’ve only
tested this on Firefox 1.0.7 and IE 6 so if you’re having problems with another browser,
let me know.
There are a million* and one things I want to get done
to this site, which for various reasons, never get around to being done. I’d like to
change the web design page, I’d like to finish my about page (there is a version around,
but it’s not linked to), I’d even like to find a way to make Catch look the same in IE
and other non-standard browsers as it does in
href="http://www.mozilla.org/firefox">firefox
(yes IE users, it is meant to look neater
than that!). I also want to move away from the static nature of the photo and renders
pages and find something exciting and dynamic that I can get to produce the
pages.
But wait, I have. Last week I happened across
href="http://gallery.menalto.com">gallery
which I thought might do the job, but it
turned out it was a little too complicated for my little brain. Then I found
href="http://www.zenphoto.org/">zenphoto
which has basically the same functionality but
made to be far simpler, which is far more my style.
So the new
href="http://www.timfry.co.uk/photos">photos
section has been born. It’s still a beta
at the moment, primarily because zenphoto is still only at version 0.9 but also because it
involves me fiddling with php and databases, and I can’t guarantee that I’ve not broken
anything.
So go take a look. The old photo section remains
href="http://www.timfry.co.uk/my-photos">here
for you to compare against. I’ve also
uploaded a complete set of New Zealand photos so you don’t have to trudge through the
diary to see them all. Enjoy.
* There’s not really a million, more like 3
or 4.

As promised, I’ve finished uploading and adding all of my New
Zealand photos to the New Zealand
page.
I might put them all up as one photo gallery, but that would need a level of
thought that I just don’t have right now…
Here follows a series of short bites that I don’t have the time to turn into full posts…
1) You’ll be pleased to know that I’ve finally finished my camera film with the remaining New Zealand photos on, so the New Zealand pages should be complete in the near future, I’ll let you know when it’s done.
2) I’ve finally said goodbye to Abingdon as I managed to get my flat handed back early, therefore saving myself a great deal of money.
3) The video iPod, no thanks. There’s a reason you can’t get films for it, the battery will only last 2 hours.
4) While I’m at it: iTunes 6, no thanks either. I’m starting a revolution, brushed metal for ever!
At the start of the month,
href="http://www.purbeck.gov.uk">Purbeck District Council
started a new scheme to make
us recycle more… they told us that they’d only collect the rubbish once a fortnight and
that the other week they would only collect recyclable materials (which they’ve collected
separately for a while). Now this is all very good, and I’m all up for recycling/saving
the planet, but I just have one minor issue with the new scheme.
If you want people
to recycle, then please take everything which can possibly be recycled, don’t just pick
and choose.
Currently they won’t accept plastic bottles, which they want you to
take to the bottle bank yourself. I
href="http://www.purbeck-dc.gov.uk/services/category.asp?strareano=22_44_4">quote
…
“Currently it is not viable to collect plastic bottles from the
kerbside as there are great difficulties in the collection and handling of plastics mostly
due to the amount of space they take up on the vehicle.”
I know
they’re bulky and won’t make much money, but you can’t want us to recycle, limit us on
the amount of non-recyclable material that will be collected and then not take everything
that can be recycled? You need to make it easy for people, or I know where those plastic
bottles will go.
Good news everybody!
href="http://www.doves.net">Doves
(they of my favourite band fame) are playing the very
local Poole Lighthouse on December 8th,
hurrah!
You should never stop learning, especially
from people who have similar passions/jobs to you.
href="http://screenspire.com/">Screenspire
aids web designers to this end by displaying
a gallery of new site designs every day.
If it’s nothing else, it’s a site where
you can waste a whole lot of time, although I see it more as a source of continuous
inspiration.

Now I’ve never been a
great fan of music for charity. I’d rather just donate money then have a single from that
moment’s ‘leading’ pop artist in return. I even missed Live 8 by being in New Zealand
(I haven’t quite got around to finishing watching the video of it!). Thankfully, I’ve
found something that bucks the trend…

The aim of football (believe it or not) is to put the ball in the net more than your opponent. To achieve this, you actually have to put the ball in the net! Sorry saints, but seven draws in a row just isn’t good enough, please learn to score. It didn’t use to be this hard!
So dire is our scoring ability that our goal in yesterdays 1-1 draw away to Preston had to be scored by a Preston player!
Edit 28/10/05 - Changed the title and text to ’seven draws in a row’ instead of wins, as I wouldn’t be complaining about wins!
